Relax and listen to the sound of the Atlantic waves as I explore the lost village of Courtaparteen.

A sacred place...Courtaparteen, near Kinsale, Co. Cork, is said to be an abandoned Famine village, dating back to the 7th century. In total, there are the ruins of 9 houses here. According to locals, although it's known as a famine village, the last people to leave here left in the 1950s.

Next to the village are the ruins of a medieval church (the old parish church of Kilrone) and a graveyard. The oldest headstone here dates from the 1700s. There are many small unnamed graves here.

I found this place peaceful, and I drifted away, wondering what life would have been like here in this little community.
In these months, they must have been very cold, falling asleep to the sound of the waves each night...
