Protoceratops is a genus of small protoceratopsid dinosaur that lived in Asia during the Late Cretaceous, around 75 to 71 million years ago. The genus Protoceratops includes two species: P. andrewsi and the larger P. hellenikorhinus. P. andrewsi was described in 1923 from fossils found in the Djadokhta Formation, Mongolia, while the species P. hellenikorhinus in 2001 from fossils found in the Bayan Mandahu Formation, China. Protoceratops was initially believed to be the ancestor of ankylosaurids and other large ceratopsian families, such as Triceratops and its relatives until the discovery of other protoceratopsid fossils. The P. andrewsi population likely evolved into Bagaceratops through anagenesis.
Protoceratops was a small ceratopsian, 2 to 2.5m long and weighing 62 to 104 kg. Although adult individuals are mostly quadrupeds, young individuals have the ability to walk bipedally when necessary. They are characterized by a proportionally large skull, a short, stiff neck, and a neck tuft, possibly used for display or intraspecific competition, along with protection for the neck area and where the jaw muscles attach. Horn-like structures can be found in the area above the nose, which can vary in shape and size between individuals although there is no evidence of sexual dimorphism. They also have parrot-like beaks at the end of their jaws. P. andrewsi has a pair of blunt, cylindrical teeth near the tip of their upper jaw. Their hind legs are also longer than their front legs. The feet of this species are wide with four toes that have flat, shovel-shaped unguals, which are useful for digging sand. Meanwhile, the tail has a sail-like structure, which may be used for display, swimming, or metabolism.
Protoceratops, like other ceratopsians, was an herbivore with prominent jaws and teeth suitable for cutting plants and other plant material. They are considered to live in social groups of different ages. They may exhibit parental behavior. They lay soft-shelled eggs, and during maturation their skulls and tufts undergo rapid growth. Protoceratops was hunted by Velociraptor, and one extraordinary specimen (the Fighting Dinosaur) preserves the two species fighting. This genus was initially thought to be nocturnal because of the large sclerotic rings around its eyes, but evidence suggests that Protoceratops was catemeral (active at sunrise and sunset).
