Episode 25: Boss FZ-5 Fuzz

Even though I'm pretty green on most types of fuzz pedals, the Boss Fuzz pedals have always intrigued me with their silver boxes. Most fuzzes have some sort of humorous or clever name. Boss calls this one 'Fuzz'. Plain and simple. I can dig it.

Unlike the FZ-2 and FZ-3, the FZ-5 uses COSM digital modeling technology to achieve its tones. It has three modes: mode 'F' emulates the Dallas Arbiter Fuzzface, mode 'M' emulates the Maestro FZ-1A, and mode 'O' emulates the Roger Mayer Octavia.

Being a purist, it's hard to imagine getting a good fuzz sound from a digital pedal. To be totally honest, the only mode I really enjoyed was the Fuzzface mode. It actually sounded pretty good. Very 'Big Muff' like, which is good! The other two modes never seemed to really gel with my playing. I actually felt like I was using some sort of modeling device. The 'M' mode is a very narrow and high frequency type of fuzz. The low end sort of disappears, and you are left with this velcro-ish 8-bit tone. If you are going for that type of sound, it works ok. But I would pick up a Fuzz Factory by Z-Vex if you want that sound done right. The final 'O' mode was my least favorite. I actually thought that there was something wrong with my pedal when I tried it initially. Just very chaotic and it felt like the pedal had a hard time of tracking my playing. Very strange.

Overall, the FZ-5 is a decent fuzz pedal. I think the 'F' mode is worth the price of admission, with you getting a couple crazy odd fuzz tones thrown in. I'm very excited to try the FZ-2 and FZ-3. Coming soon hopefully!
