Dell PowerEdge R720xd Server Memory Support Overview & Upgrade Tips | How to Configure the System

Описание к видео Dell PowerEdge R720xd Server Memory Support Overview & Upgrade Tips | How to Configure the System

Dell PowerEdge R720xd "How To" guide for proper memory installation & configuration as well as a helpful general overview of the server .

Part of the 12th Generation from Dell, the PowerEdge R720xd is a 2U server operating on dual Intel E5-2600 V1 or V2 series processors which is an LGA2011 socket. Inside you will find 24 memory slots supported by DDR3 memory modules. There are two types of RAM supported by the R720xd: ECC Registered, also known as RDIMM and Load Reduced, also known as LRDIMM. There is one key difference between ECC Reg and Load Reduced and that is the total maximum configuration. ECC Registered will top out at 512GB of RAM via (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. With LRDIMMs, you will see a big leap with the ability for triple the capacity. You can max out at 1.5TB of RAM via (24 x 64GB) DDR3 PC3-12800L 1600MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. Now this generally raises some important questions. What is the reason we can only use 16 x 32GB ECC Reg? Why can’t our R720xd use 24 x 32GB DDR3 RDIMMs? The answer is the Rank Rule. We will review in depth in our video. We also hear a lot of questions about 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules. Do they exist? Unfortunately, 64GB DDR3 ECC Reg was never invented and only LRDIMMs support 64GB DIMMs in DDR3 world. DDR4 memory this changes completely, which would be the future 13th and 14th Gen servers from Dell.

As we stated, there are dual Intel processors. Each CPU maintains three memory channels. Each memory channel controls three DIMM slots meaning there are 3 DIMMs per channel. This is important. A lot of servers support 2 DIMMs per channel. The R720d is three per. For this reason the Rank Rule comes into play. The Rank Rule is an issue for all Quad Rank modules. And since all ECC Registered 32GB DDR3 DIMMs are Quad Rank, you can only load 2 DIMMs per channel (not 3). Which limits the number of DIMMs you can use by 1/3. Not ideal. LRDIMMs for this reason are a better technology and better solution for those looking to max out their Dell PowerEdge R720xd server. Dell has labeled and color coded the memory channels. They are easy to locate. The start of the channel will be the white DIMM slot followed by the black slot second and green slot is last. With two processors, the proper memory configuration would be groups of 8. You want to evenly spread your DIMMs across each channel. Start by using the first 8 white slots. Then next 8 black slots. Then next 8 green slots to max. We will review in more depth in our video and also show exactly how to load the DIMMs inside your Dell PowerEdge R720xd server.

Today is the day. Learn more about the different RAM options for your Dell PowerEdge R720xd. This enterprise level server with an incredible platform was designed to manage a wide range of virtualization applications and SMB needs. Large corporations run racks upon racks of this popular server as the backbone of their IT Infrastructure. Whatever your needs, the R720xd could be a good solution. Dell wanted this server to be a general-purpose platform with highly expandable memory and storage capabilities with the ability to server small or large clients.

In this video, we provide a helpful overview regarding the possible memory specs and also unveil useful support tips for optimum performance from your Dell PowerEdge R720xd.
