人生を「仕事」に費やすなかで、「自分」はどう存在し得るか

彫刻、ヒップホップ、映像表現、心理学などから影響を受け、独自のダンス言語によってさまざまな潜在的社会慣習を打ち破る振付家、デイナ・ミシェル。新作にして日本初となるライブパフォーマンスは、誰しもが人生の大半を費やす「仕事」と個のアイデンティティ——ワーク・ライフ・バランスをテーマとする。膨大なタスクは本来の「自分」を追いやり、個は「仕事をする私」としてあらざるを得ない。では、人生のなかに「自分」はどれだけ存在するのだろうか？
2022年には城崎・京都で滞在制作を行い、多様な現場で仕事に従事する人々の姿、個々の信念や精神性がどのように構築されるのかを考察。そのプロセスを経て、自身の身体と「仕事」にまつわるオブジェクトを用い、即興的なパフォーマンスとして結実するダンス作品は、観客の目にいかに映るか。出入り自由の空間で、3時間にわたり展開される身体表現の迫力を体感してほしい。

How can the “self” exist amid a life dedicated to “work”?

Influenced by the likes of sculpture, electronica, cinematography, and psychology, Dana Michel is a choreographer who disrupts various social conventions through her own unique physical language. Her latest work and first live performance in Japan focuses on the theme of work-life balance—exploring the relation between work, which takes up the majority of everyone’s life, and individual identity.

Endless work tasks push the real “self” into a corner and force the individual to be a “working self.” How many “selves,” then, exist within ourselves? In 2022, Michel carried out a residency in Kinosaki and Kyoto in which she examined people working in a diverse range of fields to see how individual beliefs and spirituality are constructed.

MIKE takes shape as an improvisational performance through Michel’s application of this research process and use of her own body and objects related to “work.” The piece is performed in a space, where audience members can freely come and go. Experience the power of physical expression that unravels through this three-hour performance.
