Gopal Krishna Gokhale was born on 9th May, 1866 in Kothluk, Ratnagiri, Bombay Presidency present day Maharashtra. He went to Rajaram School in Kolhapur and then to Elphinstone College for education. His mentor was Mahadev Govind Ranade who founded Poona Sarvajanik Sabha. Gopal Krishna Gokhale established his Servants of India Society with the help of Mahadeva Govind Ranade in 1905. Through his Servants of India Society Gopal Krishna Gokhale wanted to apprise the people of the political conditions of India and instill in them a sense of nationalism. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress Benares Session of 1905. He was also responsible for the progressive elements of the Morley Minto reforms of 1909 and clashed with Bal Gangadhar Tilak on the AGE OF CONSENT BILL which aimed at increasing the minimum marriage age of girls. Gopal Krishna Gokhale through his ELEMENTARY EDUCATION BILL 1910 sought to introduce free and compulsory education which laid down the platform for RIGHT TO EDUCATION ACT 100 years later.
