My Biggest PLANT FAIL I Ficus, Keiki Cloning Paste, Repotting, Watering Plants

Oh the trials and tribulations of being a plant parent to a Ficus.

This Ficus Altissima was in a self-watering pot until it became root-bound decided to off itself. As a result of the wick being unable to saturate the soil, this plant became severely under-watered and lost most of its leaves (okay fine, all of them).

However, if a plant has good roots, in my experience, I can nurse it back to health. I used Keiki Cloning Paste (linked below) to assist in filling out the bare spots on the branches, but it's a slow process and I made mistakes along the way, but plant care is all trial and error, isn't it?

The proper way to apply Keiki Cloning Paste is to score the node and apply the paste on 2-3 nodes (not what I did). In 4-8 weeks, you should see new growth coming in.

What did I learn from this experience?
(1) I still like self-watering pots, but I need to make sure to monitor the soil moisture like I do with any other plant.
(2) I should not buy any more Ficuses (kidding, not kidding?)
(3) If a plant is drying out quickly, growth is stunted, and/or roots are coming out from the bottom of the pot, it's time to up-size and repot! Some plants are more tolerant of being snug and root-bound (e.g. Monsteras), while others are not (e.g. THIS PLANT).

Ironically, my Ficus Tineke is my most low-key plant, but a select variety of Ficuses are more dramatic than others (e.g. Ficus Audrey and oh the Fiddle Leaf Fig). Do you have a low-key Ficus, or are they all drama queens for you?
