How does License Plate Recognition (LPR) / Automatic Number plate Recognition (ANPR) Work?
Once the camera has captured the license plate image, our firmware translates it into digital (machine-readable) characters.

License plates all over the world vary in sizes, colors, numerations and design; to process the plate, we have to make sure the camera “knows what to expect”; for the OCR software to recognize a license plate correctly, we have to "teach" the algorithm to take into account features beyond the license plate.

#LicensePlateRecognition is 4 stage process:

1 • Localization:
Locating the License Plate within the whole image, disregarding unnecessary data and focusing on the characters.
2 • Segmentation:
Separating the precise zone containing every character to separately identify them.
3 • Identification:
Character recognition from the individual zones previously identified.
4 • Regionalization:
Regional Syntactical Correction to identify ambiguities on apparently identical characters (I and 1, O and 0, B and 8, etc.).

Survision #LPRcameras complete this process in less than 20 milliseconds.

During step 4, special characteristics of each country/state (We call it "Context") are taken into account for a proper final verdict.

Building a unique algorithm to understand all license plates is very hard: to make LPR a reliable solution we must guarantee that the camera always reads what is really on the plate and it has to do it really fast (less than 30ms!).

So little room for error... there must be another way!

New advances in Neural Network engines allow us to help our system to learn with every plate it reads; we use tons of previous readings to feed our cameras and provide them with "experience" which makes them "wiser" and more precise.

The more readings we make, the more chance to correctly read the license plate, helping us to get closer to 100% accuracy.
