blackeyed susie clawhammer banjo lesson | from Joseph Decosimo

Here's an old-time clawhammer banjo lesson for Black Eyed Susie. I learned it more or less from Clyde Davenport's incisive playing. I'm sure it's not perfect, but I've tried to get it fairly close to what he did. It's pretty straightforward clawhammer banjo playing. If you can get your hands on a cassette of his "Puncheon Camps" album, you can hear him playing it. He leaves some interesting gaps in the melody and makes good use of the bass string.

I'm tuned kind of low—f Bb F Bb C—because I like how it sounds, but it's a double C or D tune if you're playing with a fiddle. Clyde D played a wonderful fiddle version in C. Most folks fiddle it in D.
