Philosophy – Mind Body Problem: Is Consciousness Physical, or Beyond Matter?
By Dr. Vikas Divyakirti & Osho Rajneesh
The mind–body problem is one of the oldest questions in philosophy: Is consciousness simply a product of the brain, or does it transcend matter? Modern science often views the mind as an emergent property of physical processes. Neurons fire, chemicals interact, and out of this arises thought, memory, and awareness. Yet, this explanation leaves a mystery unsolved—how does subjective experience, the feeling of being alive, emerge from matter?
Dr. Vikas Divyakirti emphasizes a rational perspective. He argues that human thought, reasoning, and emotions are deeply tied to biological structures. Without the brain, there is no consciousness as we understand it. For him, studying the mind scientifically is crucial, because philosophy cannot ignore evidence from neuroscience. Still, he admits that the “hard problem of consciousness”—the leap from physical activity to subjective awareness—remains unanswered. Thus, he views consciousness as partly biological, yet not fully explained by biology alone.
On the other hand, Osho Rajneesh approaches the question spiritually. For Osho, consciousness is not limited to the body or brain; it is the essence of existence itself. The body is like a vehicle, while consciousness is the driver. He teaches that meditation reveals this truth—when thought ceases, one realizes that awareness exists independently of matter. According to Osho, to reduce consciousness to neurons is like reducing music to vibrations—it misses the beauty and depth of the phenomenon.
Together, these perspectives reflect the tension between science and spirituality. While science investigates how the brain works, spirituality explores what consciousness truly is. The mind–body problem may never have a single answer. Perhaps consciousness is both physical and beyond—rooted in matter, yet opening a doorway to the infinite.
