Why is it so hard to take of myself? Why is it hard for you to take care of yourself? I've grappled with this question since my twenties and I'm in my late 50s now.
Caring for myself has to do with body, art practice, taking care of the house. Taking care of myself has been hard in all of those places.
Recently I had a realization that when I was pregnant it was no problem - I stopped smoking, drinking, started eating healthy, exercised and took care of myself. It wasn't a problem. And the reason was there was a little person growing in my body and I had an instinct to take care of that person. I was mothering, nurturing, tender, I sang to her in the womb.
What if that quality is what I give to myself? Instead of pushing hard to 'lose weight, get in shape, clean the dishes' - all these admonitions I have about taking care of myself. What if instead of admonitions or the push I approach myself with tenderness, love, nourishment, nurturing?
I did an experiment for a week and the shocking thing was I lost my cravings because a lot of the eating I'd been doing was not about food but about love - feeling lonely, sad, whatever.
It's hard to notice when you are being non-supportive to yourself. It's a habit. Consider this:
What quality of being are you using with yourself? Pushy, aggressive, disappointed.
Then ask yourself what quality of being would be really helpful. Love, caring, nurturing. Breathe it in, pull it into yourself. It softens everything and there is a hope that comes in.
I'm in the process right now of creating a new program called 'Weight Loss with Love". Watch for that coming soon!
