Colon Cancer Surgery के बाद recovery कैसी होती है? | Left Hemicolectomy Recovery! |Dr Praveen Kammar
Hospital Stay Duration
After a left hemicolectomy, recovery duration depends on how the surgery was performed—open, laparoscopic, or robotic. In our experience, most patients stay around 5 to 6 days post-surgery. Laparoscopic and robotic approaches usually result in faster healing due to smaller incisions, less blood loss, and quicker bowel recovery. However, in some cases, recovery may take longer depending on overall health, diabetes, smoking, or nutritional status.
When Do the Intestines Start Working Again?
Post-surgery, it usually takes about 3 to 4 days for bowel movements to return. In the initial 1–2 days, we start patients on a liquid diet. If they tolerate it well, we gradually shift to soft foods by Day 3. By the time bowel movement resumes, patients can comfortably start eating normally again.
Functional Recovery Timeline
We begin mobilizing patients from Day 1. They’re encouraged to get out of bed, perform breathing exercises, walk with support, and slowly regain independence. Pain management is key to making this possible. We use techniques like epidural catheters, abdominal wall blocks, or patient-controlled pain relief to keep pain under control and speed up recovery.
Regaining Independence Before Discharge
By Day 4 to Day 6, we aim to reach a point where the patient can walk, perform daily activities like brushing teeth, using the toilet, and basic movement independently. This confidence is crucial before discharge.
Full Recovery Timeline
Getting back to full normal life—work, household tasks, and daily routine—takes time. On average, it may take 1 to 2 months. Some patients recover faster, while others take longer depending on factors like malnutrition, smoking, alcohol use, or other medical conditions. If there are no complications and the healing goes smoothly, the patient starts feeling “normal” within this period.
Follow-Up and Long-Term Outlook
We usually call patients around Day 11 or 12 post-op to remove stitches and discuss the pathology report. This report also helps us plan any further treatment like chemotherapy or targeted therapy if required. If follow-up treatment is needed, the next phase begins right after surgical recovery.
