"Niisaachewan Anishinaabe First Nation", (formerly, but still commonly and incorrectly known as the Dalles First Nation and Ochiichagwe' Babigo'Ining Ojibway Nation), is an Ojibway-Saulteaux First Nation band government in the Kenora District of Ontario, near Sioux Narrows, of Lake of the Woods. The total registered band membership as of November 2021, is 493 and the on-reserve population as of 2016, is 190 people. As a member of Treaty 3, the First Nation is affiliated with the Bimose Tribal Council and the Kenora Chiefs Advisory. Near this site, on October 3rd 1873, Chiefs Powas'sin and Mawin Do Benais, spokesmen for the Ogitchi Taug of the Anishinaabe Nation concluded the "Northwest Angle Treaty", "Treaty Number Three", (a..k.a.: "Paypon Treaty") with Lieutenant Governor, Alexander Morris, a representative of Queen Victoria. This treaty, between the British Crown and the Anishinaabe Nation recognized the sovereignty of the Anishinaabe People in the Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake Country, to the English River.. and Lac Seul, in the north. Treaty No. 3 was to become the "model" for all treaties made in Western Canada, thereafter.
