We present a very fun demo comparing three sensational amps: two original Fender Champs (from 1957 & 1958) and a Custom Shop Reissue ('57 Champ). It's not really a thorough comparison as you will see, but rather a fun attempt of putting these side to side to discover any obvious resonance, overdrive, compression and tonal clarity differences. All three sound great, but they vary mainly in harmonics and highs.
The '57 Reissue is the most compressed of all three Champs: very dark and grumpy, and it sounds as if it was going to exploded when driven hard. Almost no twang at low volumes, so we'll say that sweet spot for this one is basically with the volume dialed all the way up.
The original 1957 in mint condition, by the way, cleanest '57 we've ever seen is the most balanced option of all three (technically speaking). Much cleaner than the RI, with beautiful clean tones at low volumes (check the nice intro) and creamy overdrive, full of character. If there's a sign of darkness with this one, it's probably due to a not-so-efficient speaker, totally understandable with a hardly-ever-played-for-over-50-years cone.
The '58 is our favorite of all three (also in great condition). Rich sounds, huge harmonic depth, amazing clarity (crazy twang!). This one defines the classic Fender sound, no doubt, and when you crank it it's easy to hear where many classic rock recordings actually came from (yup, from a little baby just like this one). And it is definitely NOT a one-trick pony, not this one, folks (whereas the RI could be), you have most legendary Fender sounds within this little tone monster.
Oh yeah: Layla with a Les Paul. Sorry, purists, but we think it sounds even cooler!
Our favorite option would be the '58 with Strat for clean tones, and Les Paul for overdriven sounds. We've used a Yuriy Shishkov Masterbuilt LTD 1964 Stratocaster and a 1959 Les Paul Reissue.

Os presentamos una divertida demo comparativa de tres amplis sensacionales: dos Fender Champ originales (uno del '57 y otro del '58) y una reedición ('57 Champ Reissue de la Custom Shop). No se trata de una comparación exhausta, sino para más bien descubrir que existen claras diferencias de resonancia, overdrive, compresión y claridad. Los tres suenan bien, pero varían principalmente en riqueza de armónicos y agudos.
El '57 Reissue es el más comprimido de los tres y muy oscuro, muy "gruñón", hasta el punto que parece que va a explotar cuando se lleva a niveles máximos. Los limpios tienen poco twang, por lo que su punto fuerte reside en los altos volúmenes.
El 1957 original, que por cierto está en un estado seminuevo, a pesar de los casi 60 años a su espalda (¿el James Brown de los Champs?), es la opción más equilibrada de los tres. Muchísimo más claro que el RI, con un limpios precioso a bajos volúmenes (como podéis ver en la intro) y una distorsión muy cremosa y con carácter, con un toque algo ronco que sin duda se debe únicamente al cono, poco usado a lo largo de las décadas.
El '58 es mi favorito de los tres (también en un gran estado de conservación). El sonido es muy rico, y rápidamente se nota que goza de muchísima claridad y definición (el twang de este es impresionante), y la redondez del tono es enorme. Define el típico sonido limpio de Fender, sin duda, y tampoco cuesta detectar de dónde han venido cientos de grabaciones famosas en la historia de la música al subirlo de volumen y escuchar su magnífico overdrive. Y ciertamente no se trata de un "one-trick pony" (caballito de un sólo numerito) -cosa que sí es el Reissue-, sino que ofrece una gran paleta de tonazos Fender.
Y por último: sí, Layla con Les Paul. Pedimos perdón a los puristas, pero a nosotros casi que nos suena mejor.
Como configuración preferida, nos quedamos con el '58 en todos los casos, con Strato en limpios y con Les Paul para overdrives. Las guitarras usadas son una Masterbuilt Yuriy Shishkov 1964 Stratocaster LTD y una Les Paul 1959 Reissue.
