Every camping trip I've had the last couple of years has included heavy rain for at least one day. Out of necessity I had to use a tarp to save the trip. It's not difficult. All you need is:

1) a large tarp: get one twice the size of your tent
2) paracord: several hundred feet
3) grommet savers/bungee balls

You can get all this stuff cheap at Wal-Mart or other discount farm/hardware stores.
