In the fall I like to give my ladies a good coop cleanout. I feel like it gets them settled into a nice, clean space for the winter.

A clean coop keeps odors and bacteria down, which is better for their health. I only clean the inside a few times a year because my seven girls roost outside and the interior doesn’t get as dirty for me. You may have to do yours more often if your chickens are in the bedding area more and make more messes.

And this cleans up a lot of their fallen feathers. This is completely normal for this time of year. Chickens lose their feathers to grow more efficient winter feathers, keeping them warmer once the cooler temps hit.
