Space Debris is a problem
In order to safeguard the space environment around Earth in a sustainable manner and make informed decisions about space debris mitigation we require more detailed, thorough and regular data on space debris, and the ideal place to acquire them is in orbit. At present, few in-orbit measurements of space debris are performed and while larger cm-sized debris objects
can be tracked from the ground using radar, lasers or special telescopes, smaller objects cannot be detected in this way.

With ADLER-1 these tiny micro debris particle will be detected through a radar-based detection of particles which pass by near the cubesat an the Austrian Particle Impact Decetor (APID) which measures the impact energy of the particles with a deployable piezoelectric array. The APID dector, is developed by the Austrian Space Forum.
