In this Balkan Travel Vlog, we explore the divided city of Mitrovica in Kosovo. Our goal is to interview a person from the Serbian north side of the city and an Albanian from the south.

In 2013, the Serb-majority municipality of North Mitrovica was created, dividing the city in two administrative units. According to the 2011 Census, in Mitrovica live 97,686 inhabitants, 85,360 of which in the southern municipality and 12,326 in North Mitrovica. The North and South are separated by a guarded river, Kosovo Albanians populate the south of the city, and the remaining North side is populated by ethnic Serbs. On the South side, the Albanian language is spoken, but across the bridge it’s like you’re in Serbia. The license plates, language, flags, and even money changed to Serbian.

Our goal was to interview a Serbian on the North side and an Albanian on the South side of Mitrovica. We started our day off visiting the North Side because we wanted to hike to the Monument to Fallen Miners Spomenik. While we were viewing the Spomenik on the North side we were able to interview a local Serbian. He was nice enough to answer our questions about a wide range of topics on the situation in Mitrovica. From the Spomenik we made our way back to the South side where we interviewed two different Albanians. We asked each individual all the same questions and we really enjoyed speaking to each of them because it helped us get a better understanding of Mitrovica.
