something catastrophic happened. As temperatures rose, meltwater from the retreating ice sheets flooded Doggerland. Over thousands of years, this enormous landscape disappeared into the sea. Entire settlements vanished. Forests drowned. Rivers became coastlines. And the people who once lived there were forced to move.
Some migrated into what is now Britain. Others moved into the northern Netherlands. Their descendants are still there today — hidden deep beneath later migrations, but not erased.
This was only the first layer.
A second great wave came from an unexpected direction.
Around 7,000 years ago, farmers arrived from the south — early European agriculturalists who brought wheat, barley, domesticated animals, pottery, and completely new ways of life. They built settlements on the sandy soils of the Netherlands, clearing forests to plant crops. Their DNA is still found most strongly in the southern Dutch regions, especially Brabant and Limburg, where farming has always been central.
For a long time, historians believed these early farmers and the original hunter-gatherers mixed peacefully. But DNA tells a more dramatic story — at first, they lived side by side with very little mixing. Two cultures, two diets, two traditions, sharing the same land but rarely sharing families. Only later did their bloodlines merge.
