EU's AI Act and Human Rights

For the past decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have increasingly been impacting our lives. States have deployed unregulated AI systems to assess welfare claims, monitor public spaces, or determine someone’s likelihood of committing a crime.

However, the current hype around Artificial Intelligence (AI) is distracting us from the real harms of AI-powered technologies, as many AI systems have increased racism and inequalities, and perpetuated human rights harms and discrimination.

Now as legislators in the European Union (EU) and member states race against time to pass world’s most comprehensive AI rulebook, the AI Act, by the end of 2023, Amnesty International with a coalition of civil society groups led by European Digital Rights (EDRi) urges EU legislators to ban harmful AI technologies in the AI Act.
