Peter Gabriel was born in Surrey, England in 1950. He says of his early influences, "Hymns played quite a large part. They were the closest I came to soul music before I discovered soul music. There are certain hymns that you can scream your lungs out on, and I used to love that. It was great when you used to get the old shivers down the back." At 15, he formed the band Garden Wall with schoolmate Tony Banks and others, then another band that he wanted to call Gabriel's Angels, but others convinced him to call Genesis. After a few albums and little success, they recruited guitarist Steve Hackett and drummer Phil Collins. For a stint in 1971, frontman Gabriel had to perform shows in a wheelchair and crutches after attempting to stage dive and the crowd suddenly parting. After five years, Gabriel left to go solo, feeling that the band was holding him back (and the band frustrated at Peter's theatrics taking the spotlight). Peter released four solo albums before 1986's So, one of the greatest albums ever (featuring "Sledgehammer", "In Your Eyes", "Red Rain", and "Big Time"). So was nominated for Best Album Grammy but lost out to Paul Simon's Graceland. "Big Time" and "Sledgehammer" both used stop motion claymation and strata-cut animation by artist David Daniels.
