The Battle of Atbara fought between 10,000 British, Egyptian and Sudanese troops and 15,000 mahdists in 1898 was a decisive victory for General Herbert Kitchener.

With the completion of that 220 mile railway through the harsh Nubian desert, Kitchener was finally able to bring British troops, including the Cameron and Seaforth Highlanders and the Warwickshire and Lincolnshire regiments to join his Egyptian and Sudanese army advancing against the Mahdi's successor, the Khalifa.

In response the Khalifa sent a 15,000-strong army under his cousin, Mahmoud, and the veteran warrior, Osman Digna, to confront him at Atbara (just east of the Nile).

The Mahdist army established a fortified position forcing Kitchener into a risky frontal assault.

His attack on Good Friday, the 8th April 1898, resulted in a decisive victory with over 3,000 Mahdists killed and 4,000 (including their commander) captured.

His success at the battle of Atbara, cleared the way for Kitchener to march towards the Khalifa's main army at Omdurman.

It was a battle that featured two future First World War commanders, Douglas Haig and David Beatty, and for fans of "Dad's Army" it also featured a Corporal Jones.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.

History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.

My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"

Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.
