The Mayan Theater, a historic Los Angeles venue with 98 years of legacy, will permanently close in September. The announcement was made by the venue's team, expressing gratitude to patrons for 35 memorable years. Weekly Saturday night events will continue until September 13 as a final celebration. Manager and owner Sammy Chao cited the prolonged effects of COVID-19, inflation, industry strikes, changing consumer habits, and challenging policies as key reasons for the closure. Chao emphasized that despite extensive efforts to adapt and survive, continuing operations became unsustainable. Originally opened in 1927 with Mayan Revival architecture, the theater was used for live performances and films before its transformation in 1990 into a popular nightclub and music venue. Over the years, it hosted numerous renowned acts including Jack White, Panic! At the Disco, INXS, Muse, Moby, The Residents, and Daft Punk, who shared rare footage of their 1997 performance there in 2022. The venue’s closure marks the end of a significant cultural era in L.A.
