Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that can affect the way a person thinks, feels, and experiences reality. One of its hallmark symptoms is the presence of hallucinations, which are sensory experiences that feel real even though they aren’t caused by external stimuli.
For many people with schizophrenia, this can mean hearing voices that no one else hears. These voices might seem to come from inside the mind or from outside the environment, and they can vary in tone and message—sometimes critical, commanding, or simply conversational. To the person experiencing them, these voices often feel as real as if another person were speaking in the room.
In addition to auditory hallucinations, some individuals also experience visual hallucinations—seeing things, people, or shapes that aren’t actually present. These visions can range from vague shadows or flashes of light to fully formed figures. Other senses, such as touch or smell, may also be affected, though less commonly.
