Titta Ruffo (June 9, 1877 - July 5, 1953). This is the ultimate chiaroscuro voice. So dark and yet so full of squillante!! Ruffo studied with Persechini who was the voice teacher of De Luca and Battistini. After leaving home he also studied briefly with Lelio Casini the great lyric baritone. After that Ruffo speaks of learning his technique from his brother who was a graduate of Santa Cecilia in Rome. According to Ruffo it was a very scientific approach. There are many theories as to why his voice went downhill after about 25 years of great singing. I don't think anyone can really know, but Ruffo himself.
