The abandoned Mitsero mines in Cyprus were once a rich source of copper and iron pyrite. Pollution from the mining operations have turned one of the open quarries into a toxic red lake. Mining operations stopped in the 1970's but the mine would return to the publics eye in 2019.

In April 2019 German tourists discovered a body in the mine shaft after heavy spring flooding. Over the next few months 7 victims would be discovered in the mine and in its toxic red lake.

Nikos Metaxas a former army officer confessed to the murders. He has been sentenced to seven life sentences, the largest sentence in Cypriot history.

We did not know the history of this location while exploring.
