Over the last several days, MGM Resorts in Las Vegas has been hit with a massive cyber attack. This attack has affected guest services, the MGM Resorts website & app, and even the gaming floors at casinos up and down the Vegas Strip including the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur.

Hotel guests were left in massive hours-long line ups waiting to check in as staff used manual processes. Payment systems went down across the resorts and, as such, people couldn’t use credit or debit cards to pay for food & beverages. Room key cards were deactivated and the digital key app was unavailable meaning guests were unable to access their rooms. And slot machines were either out of order or malfunctioning, not issuing payment slips forcing every payout – no matter the size – to be a handpay.

A little over a year ago, I was joined on the podcast by Charles H. Barry, an expert in casino and corporate security, surveillance, and investigations with over 30 years of experience in the field.

One of the things we discussed was the emerging threat of cyber attacks on casinos and whether or not those casinos were prepared for such an attack.

Apparently, they weren't.
