ECOWAS leaders have commanded the immediate intervention in Niger, instructing their standby force to take action and reinstate constitutional order after a military coup took control last month. Omar Alieu Touray, the President of ECOWAS, conveyed this decision during an organization meeting. He directed the defense staff committee to promptly activate the ECOWAS standby force to restore the constitutional order in Niger. ECOWAS Chairman, Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, emphasized that the political turmoil in Niger posed a threat to regional stability.

A special summit focusing on the political situation in Niger was held in Abuja. This meeting was attended by Presidents from various West African countries, along with representation from Liberia and the Gambia. Despite concerns that such an invasion could lead to instability in the Sahel region, ECOWAS proceeded with its decision, receiving support from Western nations like the United States and France. Meanwhile, Niger's military junta had already announced a new government, naming Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine as the prime minister to lead a cabinet of 21 ministers.
