DEVELOPING: Melbourne has been hit hard by destructive winds in a wild 24 hours that forced schools shut and left almost 200 thousand homes and businesses without power.

The storm turned tragic on the border, where a woman was crushed by a falling tree as a mammoth clean-up begins across the state.
