My house gets up to 85 in the summer and I wanted to avoid buying an aquarium chiller and I read mixed reviews on the Peltier cooler so I started to experiment. I came up with a method that cools my tank by 10 degrees with the help of a small fan and a tank cover.
The amount mine evaporates per day is around 20 ounces. USE distilled or good RO water to refill your tank when it gets low. Do not use regular tap water (even if you condition it) because of all the minerals. If you want to go the extra mile, then get a good quality filter for your A/C unit. This will help pull out junk in the air before it gets blown into your tank.
My Crystal red shrimp are sensitive to temperatures above 78 degrees. This is a great option in so many ways. First off it will chill your tank up to 10 degrees using practically no electricity. The fan uses maybe 2-3 watts. It's small and silent. Chillers can be noisy, use a lot of electricity, and are bulky. And it helps humidify your house. It's a win win situation.
