All right, here’s what happened: I had 30 minutes to make my live subtitles run faster. Currently, the subtitles show up in about 100 milliseconds, but I wanted to make them even quicker. I checked the code and saw that the “origin” server was set but not configurable.

So, I made a little change that lets me pick a closer server, hoping to cut down the lag even more. After updating the code and restarting everything in Docker, I tested it out and it worked, the subtitles were now up to three times faster, with latency dropping below 100 milliseconds. This project is called Twitch OBS Subtitles and works for both YouTube and OBS as a browser source overlay, letting you add real-time captions with lots of customization for speed, style, color, and language.

It also uses the Spoken library for speech-to-text, plus PubNub to stream the captions, and you can get it all on GitHub. Now that the subtitles are way faster, I’m super happy with the result, and the change is live in production.
