Viola - Malika Kishino

Описание к видео Viola - Malika Kishino

"Viola" is a piece for solo percussion by the composer Malika Kishino, describing the feelings and memories connected to the sensitive perception of a viola flower. This piece was performed on the 10th of June 2024 in the National Superior Conservatory of Music of Lyon, for my Bachelor Graduation Recital. Please read the following quote from the composer about her music :
"I have been fascinated for quite some time about how a particular odour can emotionally evoke my memories and how the colour portrays my sensation of a particular experience. Recent research has found that distinct sensory memories such as visual and ones regarding smell are processed in a common brain centre. In Japanese culture, people often have expressed the beauty of colour as being its fragrance. The concept of neurons was at that time unknown, but they may have intuitively sensed that colour and smell belong together.
"Viola" is Latin, etymology of "Violet" and is "Sumire" in Japanese. The colour of viola is the shortest and at the end of the visible sepctrum. The fragrance of viola has attracted people and has been used to guide divers. In my piece "Viola", I wanted to represent this association of different senses, which evoke the memory and delve into the deep reservoir within people. The particularity of spectrums of light and of the appearance and diffusion of odour are transformed into musical material. Metal instruments such as Tam-tam, spring coils, cymbals and Japanese rins, which are modified by the timpani pedals, portray the material.
"Viola" was dedicated to and commissioned by Sumire Yoshihara." (2016)
