Do you know how and when to use steroids to treat eczema or dermatitis?
This depends on the type of eczema, and if you have mild eczema, moderate eczema, or severe eczema.
You can treat eczema with safe use of steroid creams by using it short-term and thin applications.

For mild eczema, use mild steroid cream, Hydrocortisone 1% cream twice daily for 7 days
For moderate eczema, use moderate potent steroid cream, Eumovate twice daily for 7 days, or Betnovate 0.1% cream.
For severe eczema, use strong potent steroid cream, Betnovate 0.1% or Dermovate once daily for 7 days

Steroids have to be applied thinly, usually a finger tip amount which is roughly the twice the size of an adult hand, twice daily and for 7 days at which point you should see a Dr if there is no improvement.

To control eczema and prevent eczema flare ups, you can apply steroids using the steroid weekend regimen

Week 1 - apply twice a day
Week 2 – once a day, preferably evenings after a bath/shower
Week 3 – On alternate days or every other day
Week 4 – On weekends only
So as the week progresses, you;re gradually tapering off the steroids, rather than using them everyday for weeks or months and causing permanent skin damage, you’re treating the eczema while helping to avoid and minimise any side effects such as bruising, tinning of the skin and light patches.

Avoid applying both steroids and emollients together, as enollients acts a barrier preventng anything from getting through the kin and that includes steroids

So if you have a flare up, you should use the steroid first, then wait minimum 20mins, before applying any moisturisers. Once the skin is much better it does not matter which you apply first, moisturiser or steroid ad long as you wait 20 mins to allow either one to soak into the skin
