In this video, I discuss “standing like a tree.” Also known as “standing tree” or “zhan zhuang,” this is a practice from qi gong that involves simply standing in one position and holding the posture for a set duration.

At first glance, this might seem like a strange exercise. There’s no movement, let alone any resistance! What benefit can it possibly offer to someone who is already healthy?

In fact, though, zhan zhuang has potential to be one of the most transformational tools in your toolkit. The aim is to turn your attention inwards and to focus on your posture, alignment, and structure.

Are you holding tension anywhere in your body? Maybe your shoulders are tense? Are your hips aligned? Is your weight evenly distributed?

The aim is to find a position that requires you to use minimal energy while remaining upright and to simultaneously be as biomechanically sound as you can.

Eventually, zhan zhuang can actually start to feel like hard work. We’re not used to standing in a single position for long durations without shifting our weight or moving around. It seems profoundly simple and yet that’s the whole point! If you can build the kind of efficiency, structure, and control necessary to remain in this position - you can then translate all of that control and awareness to other movements and postures throughout your day.

This is a practice that everyone can benefit from and that we all should consider trying!
