For the past 3 months I have been using the M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14” every day as my main computer. With a new design, the return of essential ports, powerful M1 Pro chip, 120hz ProMotion display, these computers marked a big change in the MacBook Pro line up. Today I’m going to share my long-term review and experience with the M1 Pro 14 inch MacBook Pro. I got the M1 Pro 14” MacBook Pro in Silver with 1TB SSD I found that the 14” best of both worlds (performance and portability). I started with the base model 14” $2K. M1 Pro, 8 core CPU, 14 core GPU, 16 GB ram, 512GB SSD. Upgraded SSD to 1TB for $200. In terms of the color I chose silver. The M1 Pro MacBook Pros takes a new approach towards the design and this new design is key to this computers success. The slightly thicker design, allows for more room for better cooling. The fans are also whisper quiet. The design of these new M1 MacBook Pros also creates room for more ports. Apple brought back HDMI and the SD card slot. All this while keeping 3x USB-C ports. New keyboard, no more touch bar. I prefer hardware keys, can press without taking eyes of screen. Kept touch ID, great! Keyboard is a pleasure to type on and unlike the previous butterfly keyboard, it is reliable! Trackpad is big, accurate and is the best I’ve used. The battery too is bigger and combined with the efficient M1 Pro chip, the battery life on the 14” M1 Pro MacBook Pro is fantastic. I previously get 2-3 hours of Final Cut Pro editing on my 15” MacBook Pro, where I now get 5-7 hours, more than double! With normal day to day performance the M1 Pro MacBook Pro lasts a full 9-5 work day. The razor thin bezels and rounded concerns on the Liquid Retina XDR display look sleek. Thin bezels also allow for a larger display in a smaller computer body. The display is also 120hz, making the computer feel super smooth. Plenty bright, has high contrast and colour accuracy. Then there’s the notch, I’ve said this in my initial review, it does not bother me. It enables opportunity for more vertical screen space, great when reading articles or longer emails. Let’s talk performance. If you are thinking of getting the even more powerful M1 Max chip instead of the M1 Pro chip - you may want to think again. The M1 Pro chip has been incredible and a joy to use! I’ve never seen the computer struggle or lag. My typical daily use: FCP rendering my 4K YouTube in the background, whilst editing a thumbnail in Lightroom on top of having the regular mail, safari and documents open. All of these apps and processes run without a hitch. Not to mention the M1 Pro chip is also more power efficient than the M1 Max chip so has significantly better battery life. The price for these new M1 Pro MacBook Pros is steep, but the M1 Pro MacBook Pro delivers in all key areas, high quality design, display, long battery life and industry leading perforce. For this reason I can highly recommend it and think it’s worth the price!
