Achieving the Goal: An Integrated Multidisciplinary NICU — Why Everyone Has a Voice

Working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is one of the most complex environments in healthcare. Not only is a highly specific and advanced skill set required to care for infants safely and supportively, but it is also vital to be able to authentically navigate the unique individuals that comprise each team. This presentation will discuss the roles and responsibilities of each discipline and will describe ways in which to foster improved multidisciplinary collaboration. The role of the swallowing specialist in the NICU will be addressed, as well as the general process of nipple selection to facilitate safe and enjoyable oral feeding experiences. Lastly, the importance of continuity of care both within and outside of the NICU will be explained, while specifically considering the newly adopted International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes for Pediatric Feeding Disorder within the United States.
