The story of *Queen Bilqis* (also known as the Queen of Sheba or Malikat Saba') and *Hazrat Sulaiman (عليه السلام)* is one of the most fascinating narratives in the Quran, detailed primarily in **Surah An-Naml (The Ant)**, verses 15–44. It highlights themes of wisdom, faith, monotheism (Tawhid), humility, and the superiority of Allah's guidance over worldly power and wealth.
How the Story Begins
Prophet Sulaiman (AS), blessed by Allah with immense wisdom, a vast kingdom, control over the wind, jinn, birds, and animals, was reviewing his troops and birds one day. He noticed the absence of the hoopoe bird (hudhud) and threatened to punish it severely unless it had a valid excuse.
The hoopoe soon returned and reported astonishing news:
"I have come to you from Sheba with sure information. Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne. I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah, and Satan has made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from His way, so they are not guided." (Quran 27:22–24)
Impressed by this report yet firm in his mission, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) sent a letter to Queen Bilqis and her people. The letter began with *Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem* and invited them to submit to Allah alone, without arrogance:
"Do not be arrogant toward me, but come to me in submission as Muslims" (Quran 27:31)
Queen Bilqis' Wise Response
Bilqis, a powerful and intelligent ruler of the prosperous kingdom of Saba' (Sheba, believed to be in present-day Yemen), received the letter. She gathered her advisors and said:
"O chiefs! Indeed, there has been delivered to me a noble letter. It is from Sulaiman, and indeed, it reads: 'In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful: Do not be arrogant toward me, but come to me in submission [as Muslims].'" (Quran 27:29–31)
Her council offered military strength and readiness for war, but Bilqis wisely chose diplomacy over conflict. She remarked that kings who conquer often destroy lands and humiliate the honorable. Instead, she decided to send gifts to test Prophet Sulaiman's intentions and character.
When the gifts arrived, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) rejected them humbly, saying:
"What! Do you seek to aid me with wealth? But what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. But you rejoice in your gift." (Quran 27:36)
He then warned that he would send an unstoppable army against them unless they submitted.
The Throne Miracle
To demonstrate Allah's power, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) asked his assembly who could bring Bilqis' magnificent throne before she arrived. A powerful jinn offered to bring it before Sulaiman rose from his place, but one who had knowledge of the Scripture (often interpreted as a righteous human or jinn) brought it in the *twinkling of an eye* through Allah's permission.
Sulaiman (AS) had the throne disguised slightly to test Bilqis and said:
"Disguise her throne for her that we may see whether she will be guided [to recognize it] or be of those not guided." (Quran 27:41)
Bilqis' Arrival and Acceptance of Truth
When Queen Bilqis arrived at the palace, she was invited to enter a grand structure (a glass palace or floor with water flowing beneath it, known as **Sarh**). Mistaking the transparent floor for a pool of water, she lifted her garments (uncovering her legs) to wade through.
Prophet Sulaiman (AS) clarified:
"It is a palace [of crystal] smoothly paved with glass." (Quran 27:44)
This miracle shattered any remaining doubts. Overwhelmed by the signs of Allah's power and Sulaiman's truthfulness, Bilqis declared:
"My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Sulaiman to Allah, Lord of the worlds." (Quran 27:44)
She abandoned sun worship and embraced Islam (submission to the One True God), marking her transformation from a polytheistic queen to a believer.
