Today I'm going talk about 12 things you should know before moving to Portugal. From the stunning landscapes and awe-inspiring coasts, this amazing country has so much to offer for expats- whether it be some of the best food in Europe or warm hospitality from the locals, there is something for everyone here. But even with all that goodness, there are still some important things to consider before taking the plunge into Portuguese life. Let's get started.
1. Rent is affordable
One of the biggest benefits of living here is that you don’t need to pay hefty deposits and high rental prices like elsewhere - which makes Portugal one of the best places to move if your budget is tight. Plus, no matter where you want to stay, there's always plenty of choice available. This is one of the important things to know before moving to Portugal.
So whether you're after traditional terracotta-roofed cottages overlooking olive groves or modern waterfront apartments with stunning mountain views - Portugal has it all at a price that won't hurt your wallet!
But why exactly is rent so cheap? Most locals will tell you its because cost of living isn’t too high either; groceries are inexpensive compared with other parts of Europe and utilities bills remain low throughout most areas. It also helps that salaries are relatively low too - meaning rental properties tend not be as expensive as they could be otherwise.
2. The need to learn Portuguese
Well, before you take that leap of faith and start packing your bags, there's one thing we want to make sure you know – learning Portuguese is a must! We know what you’re thinking: “Is it really necessary to learn another language just for this move?” The answer is yes! Learning Portuguese is key for experiencing all that Portugal has to offer.
Besides having access to all the delicious food (the pastéis de nata are a must!), knowing how to speak Portuguese will also help with everyday tasks. From ordering at restaurants, conversing with locals, or even finding yourself an apartment—speaking the native language will come in handy wherever your travels may take you.
3. A great place to retire
The name "Algarve" originates from the Arabic term "al-Gharb," which can be translated as "the West." This makes perfect sense if you are considering the Algarve from an Arab point of view; nonetheless, this region is most definitely located in the south of Portugal. Additionally, retirees praise the area highly. If you want to retire here, then this is one of the first things to know before moving to Portugal.
This place has a climate that is warm practically all year round, an abundance of stunning beaches, and a community of other retired foreigners. According to the research conducted by Live And Invest Overseas, Portugal, and more specifically the Algarve, will be the finest area in the world to retire in the year 2020.
