Growing corn in raised beds is an excellent way to control soil quality, drainage, and spacing—especially in smaller backyard gardens. When you pair modern techniques with old-school traditions like using fish scraps (a method practiced by Native Americans), you can grow tall, healthy stalks and sweet, plump ears. Here's how to do it step-by-step.

🪴 1. Preparing Your Raised Bed
Bed Size: A raised bed at least 4 ft wide and 12 inches deep is ideal. Corn has deep roots, and beds need to hold moisture while draining well.

Soil Mix: Use a mix of compost, aged manure, and quality garden soil. Corn is a heavy feeder, so rich soil is a must.

pH Range: Keep soil between 6.0 and 6.8 for best nutrient uptake.

🌽 2. Spacing Corn in a Raised Bed
Corn is wind-pollinated, so block planting is better than single rows.

Spacing Between Plants: 8–12 inches apart

Spacing Between Rows: 18–24 inches (or stagger in a grid pattern for tight beds)

Number of Rows: At least 3–4 rows for good pollination

In a 4x8 bed, you can fit around 32–40 corn plants comfortably if spacing is done right.

🐟 3. Fertilizing with Fish Scraps (Native American Style)
Native Americans buried fish under corn seeds to feed the soil naturally. You can do the same with modern tweaks:

🌱 At Planting Time:
Dig planting holes about 6–8 inches deep.

Drop in a small fish scrap or a piece of fish (bones, guts, or heads work fine).

Add 1–2 inches of soil over the fish to prevent burning roots.

Plant 2–3 corn seeds in each hole above the fish.

Thin to the strongest seedling after germination.

💡 Tip: If you're worried about critters digging up the fish, freeze the scraps first, or bury them deeper with a sprinkle of blood meal on top to mask the scent.

🌿 4. Ongoing Fertilizing During Growth
Corn needs nitrogen, especially once it reaches about knee-high.

📆 Week 3–4 (After Germination):
Side-dress with compost or fish emulsion every 2–3 weeks.

You can also use a balanced organic fertilizer (10-10-10) around the base.

📆 Tasseling Stage:
Apply a high-nitrogen boost like blood meal, fish emulsion, or alfalfa meal.

Water deeply after feeding to drive nutrients to the roots.

💧 5. Watering Corn in Raised Beds
Water deeply and regularly—corn likes about 1.5–2 inches of water per week.

Raised beds dry out faster than in-ground gardens, so monitor closely, especially during hot spells.

Water early in the morning to prevent fungal issues.

🌾 6. Pollination Tip for Full Ears
When tassels appear, gently shake the stalks each morning to help pollen fall onto the silks.

This is crucial in raised beds where wind patterns might not be ideal for pollination.

🧺 7. Harvesting Corn
Ears are ready when silks turn brown and dry.

Squeeze the husk—full, plump kernels should be felt.

Peel back the tip of the husk to check kernel development before full harvest.

📌 Final Tip:
Try the Three Sisters Method by planting pole beans to climb the corn stalks and squash at the base to shade the soil. This mimics traditional Native American planting and benefits all three crops.
