Walking through Zion Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City feels like stepping into centuries of history. Built in the 16th century under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the gate connects Mount Zion with the Armenian and Jewish Quarters. Its narrow, angled entrance was designed for defense, reminding us of the challenges of life in a fortified city.

The gate itself still bears scars from fierce battles during the 1948 war, when Jewish forces tried to break through to reach the besieged Jewish Quarter. Each bullet hole etched into the stone is a silent witness to those dramatic days.

Standing here, I could take in a wonderful view over the Armenian and Jewish Quarters, and beyond them the Mount of Olives. Until 1967, this very spot marked the border between Israel and Jordan, separating families and communities for nearly two decades.

Today, as I pass through Zion Gate, I feel the contrast between division and unity, between war and peace. It is more than just an entry point—it is a living symbol of Jerusalem’s resilience and the hope for a future of openness and connection.
