Nalrajar Garh or the Fort of King Nal was actually established by Sangaldip, the original founder of the Kamata or Kamatapur Kingdom; and this name Sangal phonetically changed into Gal and eventually Gal into Nal; and thus, the name of the fort came to be known as Nalrajar Garh in Chilapata Forest of Mendabari in Alipurduar District of West Bengal. After the death of Bhaskar Varman of Kamrup, the Garh or the fort was built by Sangaldip in the second half of the seventh century in order to strengthen defensive position against Tibetan invasions that became frequent after the first Tibetan invasion of North India not long after the death of Harsha Siladitya. Tibetan Emperor Song-Tsen Gampo ordered the first invasion; and the subsequent Tibetan rulers wanted to utilise power vacuum in India after the death of the Bhaskar Varman, Harsha and Sashanka. Sangaldip and Salastambha divided Kamrup into two parts. Eastern Kamrup with capital at Tezpur came under the rule of Salastabha and Western Kamrup, Southern Bhutan, Gaur of Bengal and Tirhut of Bihar came under the rule of Sangaldip. He had a big army and he then set up the fort that came to be knwon as Nalrajar Garh. Sangaldip defeated the Tibetans in the battle of Ghoraghat; but ultimately he was defeated in the battle of Tirhut; and then taken away to Tibet.
