✅A congenital defect characterised by a hole in the wall between the atria, the two upper chambers of the heart.
✅The cause of atrial septal defect is unknown. It is a congenital (present by birth) condition which occurs during the foetal development.
Risk factors for developing atrial septal defect include:
Genetics- family history may increase the likelihood
Rubella infection during pregnancy
Certain medications, drug treatments (such as cocaine), alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy
A pregnant woman with diabetes or lupus
Obesity during pregnancy
Having phenylketonuria during pregnancy
Conditions such as down syndrome
✅Children born with atrial septal defect often have no signs or symptoms. Signs and symptoms, when observed include:

Shortness of breath often after exercise
Fatigue
Heart palpitations
Swelling in the legs, feet or abdomen
Frequent lung infections
Heart murmur
Stroke
✅Prevention
There is no sure way to prevent the condition, but the following measures may help:
Get vaccination against rubella
Monitor health conditions and check medications being used during pregnancy
Get genetic counselling to review medical history of heart defects
✅If untreated, it may lead to complications such as:
Right-sided heart failure
Arrhythmias
Increased risk of developing a stroke
Pulmonary hypertension
A permanent lung damage- eisenmenger syndrome
