A Magnificent Waterhole Swim for the Elephants & Very Bright Albino Baby, Khanyisa! 💖🐘

Khanyisa has been at HERD for two years now, after being rescued from the snare that almost took her life in January 2020! Her adoptive mother in the rescued Jabulani herd of elephants, Lundi has been by her side since Khanyisa’s integration began.

Their bond is very firm and Khanyisa follows her new mother everywhere, especially when swimming in the waterhole. The dam can be a treacherous place for small calves but Khanyisa’s herd of supporters are constantly around her to make sure she is safe.

It’s beautiful to watch her orange-pink skin splashing about with the much bigger bodies. In no time, on shore, she will reapply sand and mud to her skin to offer her more sensitive albino skin protection from insects and the harsh African sun. With summer here, we are experiencing lots of rain but also hot temperatures. The waterhole is a great blessing for not only the elephants, but all the animals and birdlife in our private wilderness in South Africa!
