Manipur government imposes 5-day internet shutdown

The Manipur government has ordered the temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services across the state. The decision comes in response to concerns over the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content on social media platforms, which the government fears could worsen the state's already fragile law and order situation.

The government has cited potential violence, damage to property, and threats to communal harmony as the reason behind the move.

The government notification stated, “Temporary suspension/curbing of internet and mobile data services including Lease Lines, VSATs, broadbands and VPN services (were ordered) in the territorial jurisdiction of the state of Manipur for five days with effect from 3 PM of September 10 to till 3 PM of September 15.”

A curfew was also imposed in the state capital Imphal and the surrounding valley areas after student-led protests sparked clashes with police on Monday.
