We spent the last week up in the absolutely stunning area of Northumberland. The beauty and wonder of the place comes from it's rich history and ancient landmarks. You are never very far away from an epic castle or an ancient stone bridge or archway of some sort. Being up there feels like being in a proper fantasy adventure and it is certainly refreshing for the soul. I took three whistles with me for the evenings as I was looking forward to doing some writing so I brought my Chieftain Thunderbird Low F whistle which is my main whistle for writing on as it's so easy and comfortable to play. I also brought a Clarke Sweetone tin whistle and this Glenluce Wexford in Bb. I wrote these jigs on the low F but they really came to life on the Bb so as soon as we got back to our home in West Yorkshire I recorded an arrangement with acoustic guitars, mandolin etc in the appropriate key.
Northumberland has a rich musical heritage too so it felt appropriate to be writing trad style music in such a place.
I've included what little footage I took of the spectacular Alnwick Castle grounds, the castle itself was unfortunately closed as the Duke and Dutches of Northumberland are residing there for the winter currently.
Anyway, here it is, my set of Northumberland jigs written during a reflective moment taking a break from the busyness of life.
