Around 5 PM on August 26th, 2025, middle-aged friends, Crystal MacDonald and Aja Wilson, were enjoying some therapeutic walking time near the intersection of Peoples Road and 5th line East on the northern edge of town. The women lived in the area, and outside fun time was one of their favorites. There was an old gravel pit there, and the forest that lined it got little human traffic, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t get bear traffic.
The long-time friends brought their canine companions for some fun too. Crystal’s four-year-old shepherd husky mix named Mia, and Aja’s one-year-old pitbull lab mix named Rosebud. The dogs enjoyed the freedom to run off leash as much as the friends enjoyed playing with them. They would play fetch and chase after each other, spending energy and deepening their bonds.
The gravel pits seemed like a safe enough place to the ladies, but the province of Ontario has had a history of bear attacks. In the year 2005, a woman who was hiking with a group of friends was killed by a bear near Timmins. By the time that attack faded from headlines and memory, in 2019, a poor berry crop drove bears into housing developments in search of food and into proximity with humans. Wildlife officials note that in years when berry and nut production drops, bears range farther and sometimes behave more aggressively. In the summer of twenty twenty-five, biologists observed uneven berry production in southern Ontario due to spring frosts followed by drought in July, creating patchy forage and drawing bears nearer to civilization and people.
Aja and Crystal had a preferred trail that they enjoyed hiking. They loaded their dogs up and soon arrived in a more remote stretch of the gravel pit that allowed them access to the forest. The gentle rain quieted their steps down the gravel road to the trailhead as they unleashed Mia and Rosebud to explore and play.
As the women chatted and took in the relaxing scene, Mia and Rosebud dashed into the brush and investigated various scents and sights they found. It took only a few minutes of walking before the women heard their dogs barking and growling, then witnessed the dogs dashing back toward them. The sight was concerning enough, but what they saw following the dogs scared them to their core.
A large, angry black bear was hot on the dogs' trails and wasn’t about to slow down as the dogs approached the women. Aja was the first person the bear focused on, and the look in the bear's eyes sent the woman into a panic. She turned to run but didn’t complete the first step before collecting herself. She froze in place, facing away from the bear, hoping it would veer off and return to its cubs. But the bear sank its teeth into Aja’s backside, sending a flash of pain through her body. She instinctively dropped to the ground in the fetal position in surrender. The bear wasn’t planning on taking any prisoners, as it used its paws and body weight to hold the woman to the ground as it clawed and bit her furiously.
That is when Crystal began yelling and waving her arms to distract the bear. She was terrified at the thought of losing her friend, and knew that distracting it was her only chance. Neither woman was packing bear spray nor a firearm on their hike, so their options were limited.
Just when it appeared over for Aja, the bear turned her gaze to Crystal. Rising to its hind legs, the bear slowly plodded toward her with its mouth open, ready to do damage. Crystal turned and stumbled down a short decline, eventually falling and hitting her head. Before she could react, the bear was on her, biting her arm. Crystal stared directly into the bear's eyes from only inches away, as it heaved deep breaths.
Then she saw Mia and Rosebud join the fray. The dogs nipped and barked at the bear, drawing its attention away from Crystal.
Mia knew just what to do with this bear, as she danced just out of range of the bear’s claws and jaws. She gave ground while staying enticingly close and lured the bear away into the forest.
Crystal and Aja rallied and made their way home to call an ambulance. First responders arrived, and the women were loaded aboard and transported to the local hospital. Upon arrival, Crystal was found to have two broken bones in her arm and suffered deep bruising over much of her body. Aja had deep gashes cleaned and closed with sutures, and the multiple puncture wounds from the bear's teeth were treated. Rosebud was uninjured during the attack, and Mia, though missing for a few hours, eventually turned up at the house with a few nasty injuries but none the worse for wear. Pictures of the women’s wounds and the injuries to Mia would not pass YouTube guidelines, so I have posted them on Patreon for your review.
