Ramani Mohan Genkhuli Pala

"Genkhuli"-- traditional and spiritual Jumma folk songs that describe history of Jummas, their tradition and culture, traditional life style, and stories of sufferings. The persons, who sing such songs, receive the "Genkhuli" title after their names.

Ramani Mohan Genkhuli is the most renowned Genkhuli singer, out of only few living Genkhuli singers in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. In this very short "Genkhuli Pala (tales)" he introduces himself and describes how he started learning and playing Genkhuli at the age of 12 only. At the end of the tale, he expresses his utmost frustration and fears that he might be the last generation of Genkhuli singers in the entire Chittagong Hill Tracts. Through this short tale, he appeals to everyone to save this 'about to die' folklore culture of the Jummas and expresses his desire to find a proper disciple, to pass on his skills and techniques of "Genkhuli" singing.
