Sailing Tasmania’s East Coast and across Bass Strait – in Winter: EP 1 Hobart to Freycinet

Episode 1: Hobart to Freycinet National Park

Welcome to the first of what will be seven episodes covering this epic sailing adventure. Not many cruising sailors cross Bass Strait because of its fearsome reputation, and even fewer have done it in winter. Now I know why.

This episode of the journey covers three days. Starting off from Hobart soon after it snowed down to 600 metres, we made our way down the Derwent River and across Storm Bay to the top end of Norfolk Bay, in perfect conditions. As we passed through the Denison Canal next day the weather turned bleak. A strong south-west change forced us to backtrack to the delightful and sheltered Lagoon Bay for the night. The third day was a cracker. After a good sail north in the morning, the wind died and we motored past Maria Island on a glassy sea. After a close encounter with many fur seals on Ile des Phoques and a nasty reef off Schouten Island, we dropped anchor at stunning Bryans Corner in Freycinet National Park.

The project has been three months in the filming and producing. I hope you like it. If you do, please give the videos a “thumbs up”, subscribe to my channel and hit the “bell” button to be notified of future releases.
