Accessible only by boat, the USS Arizona Memorial straddles the sunken hull of the battleship without touching it at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. SMG US reporter talked to descendants of those who personally experienced the war and leading scholars who has studied it for decades—have meticulously reviewed the details of the deadly morning attacks.

On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise assault on Pearl Harbor. In its devastating aftermath, 19 U.S. naval vessels were sunk or badly damaged, 188 aircraft were destroyed, and a total of 2,403 Americans were killed with another 1,178 wounded. It was, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt would famously declare the next day, “a date which will live in infamy.” In his historic speech before Congress on December 8, Roosevelt called for a declaration of war against Japan.

Subsequently, Germany and Italy were maneuvered into taking the first step, declaring war on the United States on December 11, 1941, thus fully engaging the U.S. in World War II.
