The story of Ganesha’s cleverness is one of the most loved and meaningful episodes in Hindu mythology. This short but profound story beautifully demonstrates how true wisdom lies not only in strength or speed but in understanding the essence of life.
In this inspiring speech, Swami Advaiyananda narrates the story of Lord Ganesha and the divine mango, a timeless tale between brothers Kartikeya (Subramanya) and Ganesha, under the loving guidance of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati.
🌸 The Story
Once, Shiva and Parvati had a mango that was sweet, unique, and very precious. Instead of keeping it for themselves, they decided to give it to their children. But who should receive it? Kartikeya and Ganesha both desired the fruit. Shiva decided to set a test: “Whoever goes around the entire cosmos three times and returns first shall receive the mango.”
Kartikeya, seated on his swift peacock, immediately flew off to circle the vast cosmos. Ganesha, however, paused. He realized that his parents, Shiva and Parvati, together symbolized the entire universe—Lord Shiva as Brahman (Supreme Consciousness) and Parvati as Shakti (Divine Power). With this deeper understanding, Ganesha simply circumambulated his parents three times, bowed to them, and declared, “You are my whole cosmos.”
When Kartikeya returned, he was surprised to find that Ganesha had already completed the test with greater wisdom, and thus Lord Ganesha was awarded the mango.
🌺 Deeper Meaning
This story is not just about cleverness—it reveals the secret of true knowledge. The outer world is vast, but the source of everything is within. To recognize the divine in one’s parents, in one’s guru, and ultimately in the union of Shiva and Shakti, is the highest wisdom.
✨ Lessons from the Story
Intelligence is not always about speed; it is about depth of understanding.
